Six ways to reduce waste of your winter feeds.

With the cost of supplement feed for your animals ever increasing its makes sense to keep wastage to a minimum, here are six ways to help:
If possible only feed out what will be eaten in one day, if the feed is around for longer than this it is more likely to get into the ground. With the cost of supplement feed for your animals ever increasing its makes sense to keep wastage to a minimum, here are six ways to help:
  • Don’t feed too much, an animal can eat 30-40% more than it needs if it has unrestricted access to feed.
  • If feeding out on the ground, feed in dry areas where less mud is present, feeding along fence lines can also reduce wastage.
  • Feeding using a hay feeder/rack can save 15-20% over feeding straight on the ground, this is a huge saving when totaled up over the winter months.
  • Keeping your feed fresh, i.e. baleage moist and hay dry, this will increase utilization.
  • If break feeding grass and feeding a supplement, feed the supplement first and when it all gone then let them into the new break.
